Two Breathing Exercises To Increase Your Oxygen Levels

Have you ever given some thought to your breathing, and whether you’re actually breathing properly? Or perhaps wondered if you could improve your oxygen flow in the blood? Your breathing is an important foundation and baseline for your health. Whether you have a hidden disability like I do, or you describe yourself as someone of good health, it is so important to maximise the flow of oxygen in your blood, replenishing your organs and your body.

Before we get into it, let’s picture your lungs. Maybe refresh your memory of your school biology lessons! They are vaguely triangular in shape, with the bottom of your lungs being wider than the top part. So your lung capacity is greatest at the bottom of your lungs.

If when you breathe, your chest (and shoulders) is going up and out, chances are you’re not breathing correctly. Most of us aren’t breathing correctly. By breathing into your chest, you may not be maximising the expansion of your lungs and end up with far shallower breathing than your lungs are capable of.

So the first breathing exercise is diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing. Your diaphragm is sort of like this immense band of muscle across your abdomen. When that muscle pulls downwards, it allows the bottom of your lungs, the widest part of your lungs, to fully expand and let more air into your lungs. When you inhale by blowing or pushing your belly out, your diaphragm pulls down and you let air fully enter your lungs. Yes eventually your chest rises slightly, but the action is coming from your belly first. Are you with me?

I know it takes a little tweak in your mind of this action that is mostly involuntary, but with a bit of practise it’ll become much easier. You are also teaching your body a tool to use to reduce anxiety and reduce stressful situations, so keep practicing.

The second breathing exercise is power breathing. So this is really simple to remember but it is so impactful and well..powerful!

So you’re going to take 10 power breaths three times a day, or more, but you’re taking the breaths in a particular ratio. And the ratio is 1:4:2. So you inhale for 1, you hold your breath for 4, then you exhale for 2. So let’s say for example that you decide to take an inhale for 8 seconds. Then using the ratio, you would hold your breath for 32 seconds. Then you would exhale for 16 seconds. Are you with me?

And this is great because you’re bringing some intentionality into it, so it’s like a technique you can use. You can use it regularly to punctuate your day and get some extra oxygen circulation in your blood, but you can also use this as a technique for when you’re in an anxious or stressful situation. Perhaps you’re in a great deal of physical pain, or a painful episode as a symptom of your hidden disability. It can be a great tool to move you forward through your experience of pain.

Or perhaps you’re in a never-ending queue to get on an airplane, or feeling frustrated in heavy traffic, or whatever it is that is causing your stress or worry. Use the power breathing 1:4:2 to help your body move through the situation.

3 Ways To Get Healthy Skin In Summer

I’m sure just like me, you’re grateful for the skin that you’re in and you want to do your best to take good care of it. Just as nature moves through seasons, so does your skin. Transitioning from the colder weather to the warmer weather, it helps to have some tools at your disposal to support your skin.

Changing up your skincare routine for the warmer weather is a great place to start.

Firstly, shifting your focus to hydration and boosting your hydration. Getting a really good exfoliator and using it regularly, so you can get rid of the barriers between your fresh skin coming through and your moisturiser. I go for plant-based, natural and gentle ingredients. So I use one with natural jojoba beads, bamboo powder and an active ingredient from pineapples, using it 2-3 times a week.

Next up, your moisturiser. Have you got a good serum? I have 2 that I use, and things to look for in a serum – natural ingredients and hyaluronic acid, which absorbs lots of moisture and plumps up your skin. Be proactive and drink more water (that doesn’t include teas and fruit juices), and less of those fluids that are dehydrating like caffeine.

Secondly, thinking about protection from UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays form about 95% of the radiation coming down to us, and we know what that does to our skin – and its not good. There’s nothing wrong with getting older and ageing gracefully, but you should want to protect your skin and have healthy skin going forwards. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn and redness. So we’re talking about sunscreen, for UVA and UVB rays. As it is for your face, sticking to plant based ingredients, and natural zinc oxide as the active ingredient which is great for the environment and not harmful to barrier reefs. I use a sunscreen with those ingredients.

Thirdly, its not just what you put on your face but its also what you put into your body. If you’ve got garbage going in your mouth and body, its gonna come out on your face. Perhaps having a spring clean and detox, or a deep dive into what you regularly eat? Specifically red flag processed foods, unhealthy trans fats, foods that really don’t have a high water content. Also drinking more water which I can’t stress enough. And supplementation – we are not always sure about the source or journey of that fruit or vegetable on your plate from the soil to your mouth!

There are some great supplements for your skin, with high Vitamin C (which is amazing for your skin), Biotin, Marine Collagen. So thinking about how you can boost healthy skin from the inside out.

Why Do You Want To Go ALKALINE?

So what do you know about being more alkaline? Have you ever wondered about an alkaline based diet plan? Perhaps you’re interested in the reasons behind it, or maybe you haven’t the slightest clue what I’m talking about. Either way, this video is for you my friend!

There are valid reasons for you to grasp a broad understanding of the importance of having a more alkaline internal environment e.g your blood, and the benefits to your health. Also, having some knowledge in this area will empower you to better curate what goes into your mouth and body, and what needs to stay out.

Let’s dive straight in.

So let’s understand a bit better about our internal environment, in particular your blood. Your blood is very busy delivering all sorts of important things to your whole body. Not just carrying in oxygen to where it needs to go, and not just delivering nutrients where needed all over the body, it’s like your internal ecosystem, so it is very important for it to be PH balanced for it to function and do it’s work.

Science and history have now taught us, and Tony Robbins is a really great teacher in this area, that one of the important causes of illness and dis-ease in your body is where you have an overly acidic internal environment within your body. It causes inflammation, and a variety of symptoms and conditions that cause you problems over time.

So you may be thinking, well, how does all this additional acidity get into my body? You may be surprised to know that we do this to ourselves! It is largely caused by the types of foods you put in your mouth, and into your body. There are foods that are much more acidic than alkaline, and the key is to cultivate and train yourself to have a good ratio between acid and alkaline foods in your diet.

Examples of acid-forming foods are animal products including chicken and turkey, dairy products including eggs, refined sugar, white rice, white flour, coffee & tea, wine & beer.

Examples of alkaline-forming foods are green leafy vegetables, lemons, cucumber, watermelon, celery, cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli, red peppers, onions, garlic, melons, mangoes………there are so many!

We all want to know what little steps to take to improve our wellness each day, and this is an area, your food choices, that you can impact and really feel like you’re winning!

So as a guide, you want to try and have three quarters of your meal plate with alkaline foods, and the remaining on quarter with acid-forming foods (75% to 25%). Also, a quick habit to cultivate now, is to cut half a lemon and squeeze it into 2 cups of water, and drink it every morning! Your body will thank you over time.

What Everybody Ought To Know About Sauna Bathing

So maybe like me you always figured that there were benefits to spending time in the sauna, because it feels so good and you feel more relaxed, and it’s gotta be great for your skin right?

Well, there is SO much more to know about the benefits to your health with regular sauna bathing.

I recently listened to Dr Rhonda Patrick speak at a live event, and then went on to read some of her articles, and I’m totally blown away by the research she shares and collates about the HUGE benefits to your health from regular hot sauna bathing.

In this video, I share some of the benefits that really resonated with me, however there are so many other benefits so I would encourage you, if this resonates with you, to check out Dr Rhonda Patrick and her findings to get all the specific details. In the meantime, let’s dive straight in!

I have highlighted 7 big impact benefits that resonated with me, and talk about these more in the video. They are:

Heavy Metal Detoxification

Dr Rhonda sets out how there are naturally occurring metallic elements that are toxic or poisonous and we absorb them routinely and regularly into our bodies (how nice!) such as arsenic in agricultural products, substances in cigarette smoke and car exhaust fumes, lead in toys, mercury in dental amalgam and in a lot of the fish we eat. Well if you know me, you know I’m a fan and follower of the Medical Medium teachings about removing the deep seated toxic heavy metals in our bodies, so I was excited to read that regular use of hot saunas can help facilitate the excretion of some heavy metals through heat acclimation and sweat. Result!

Helps Support Muscle Mass Maintenance

Heat acclimation through hot sauna use can help support muscle mass maintenance after muscle atrophy, often seen in injuries, or sometimes in hidden disabilities, like mine, after extended extreme episodes of pain. This was a welcome surprise for me when I read it.

Depression

Hot Sauna use has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression. Wow! Worth a read of her research on this.

Improves Mental Focus and Attention Span

Research has shown that hot sauna use supports an increase in the 2 key hormones responsible for cognitive and mental function. This is great news, right?

Inflammation

Chronic inflammation occurs on a cellular level in response to toxins and other stressors and is often invisible. It plays a key role in the development of chronic illnesses, cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Hot sauna use regularly helps to reduce inflammation. Fantastic?!

Helps Prevent Cardiovascular Disease!

Lowers Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia!

How To Write Affirmations In 5 Minutes

Have you ever thought, ‘I’d love to start using affirmations but I don’t know how to write them or where to start?” Well, great! This video is for you!

In this video, you’ll learn about how to write daily affirmations and how to write positive affirmations about yourself. I love the teaching of Jack Canfield, and this video is inspired by one of his articles that I read recently, sharing my take on it.

I use daily affirmations for health, happiness, success and positive affirmations are an important part of my everyday life. I’ve been doing this for years now. It has made me think and feel differently about my world and how I exist in it.

Your daily affirmations can help you manage your hidden disability lived experience as it has done for me. It has made me more robust in my mindset and outlook, and more resilient when faced with challenges, and absolutely full of hope, love and certainty of good things. Learn how to write affirmations quickly and how to write affirmations correctly. You can improve your whole outlook, perception and enjoyment of life with your regular daily affirmations practice. Let’s dive straight in.

How to Write Affirmations In 5 Minutes Video

So what is a daily affirmation? Well according to Jack Canfield, daily affirmations are clear positive statements designed to help you create change in yourself so you become the kind of person who is capable of accomplishing your goals in life. I’d like to add that a big part of that is how your outlook on life starts to change by becoming more empowered, more positive, more inclined to enjoy your journey that much better because as you change, the way you see your life changes. At least, that is how it has been for me.

So here is a great 8 step formula showing you how to write your affirmations quickly:

Start with “I AM”

Such powerful words in the English language! Each of your affirmations starts with these two words. That’s it. As Tony Robbins teaches, you should be careful of what words you attach to ‘I AM”, because when you regularly use them, they tend to come true as you bring them into existence. You’ve been warned!

Use the present tense

Yes, this is a big one. Always write them in the present tense. Imagine you are experiencing what you say in your affirmation right now. Write it from that place of it happening now. For example, ‘I am so happy and grateful now that….’

Affirm in the Positive

It’s so important to remember to say what you want. Don’t say what you don’t want. Saying “I don’t want to be late any more”, just means that your brain is focused on being late. Saying “ I am so happy and grateful now that I am early to my Monday team meeting”, is much more like it. Are you with me?

Keep it Brief

This isn’t the place for your version of War and Peace. You want this to be easy to memorise and repeat

Make it Specific

Saying ‘I am so happy and grateful now that I’m losing weight’ is too vague. ‘I am so happy and grateful now that I have lost 1 kg and I can fit into my favourite skinny jeans again’, is going to be easier for you to visualise and really feel the excitement behind it. Vague is a no-go!

Include an action word ending with ‘ing’

This amplifies the present tense rule as you enter into the action of doing something, and enjoying embracing the vivid image of your affirmation actually happening. I love how this puts a smile on your face as you visualise. Such a small thing, but a big thing.

Include at least one dynamic emotion or feeling word

Happiness and Gratitude are powerful emotions, so including ‘I am so happy and grateful…’ will set you up nicely

Make your affirmation for yourself, not others

Yes it would be nice to get your husband to stop smoking with an affirmation for him, but alas, it doesn’t work that way. Your affirmation is about you.

5 Benefits Of Daily Affirmations For Your Life

So if you’ve ever wondered what all the fuss is about affirmations and the benefits of daily affirmations, then this video is for you!

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably open to discovering all the tools that work for you in helping you live your best life, then you may want to tap into the importance of daily affirmations.

I am a big fan of Jack Canfield the author and teacher. His content resonates with me and the way he teaches you to excel in your life. I was reading one of his articles recently, well, re-reading it after a long time, and slightly different elements resonated with me this time; so I thought I’d share my highlights with you.

So what is a daily affirmation? Well, it’s described as a clear positive statement designed to help you create change in yourself, basically, so you become the kind of person capable of accomplishing the goals that you want. You have to say it in the present tense and also say it as though it’s already achieved. I like that part which is quite a lot of fun!

Let’s dive in!

Combats negative self talk

So when you’re repeating your affirmations to yourself every day, it’s going to help you become much more aware of what’s going on in your thoughts and basically in yourself. you become better placed to swap out all your negative self talk with your new and nourishing positive affirmations. It’s easy to get rid of something if you have another thing to replace it with. What better than to focus on positive life-giving statements that are going to boost your self-worth.

Decreases stress

Jack explains that your negative thinking is a major source of stress! That certainly has been my experience! So when you learn to replace and swap out negative self talk with positive self affirmations. You start to focus on different things. You start to focus on all of your good character traits and that makes you feel better about yourself which can increase your focus on what you’re facing by keeping you calm and helping you to think more clearly.

Lessens anxiety

So replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, and then taking a step forward by imagining positive outcomes, has been shown to help people diagnosed with anxiety disorder, in helping them to get to grips with their negative emotions. The article noted that focus on a positive result helped you remain calm and better able to deal with stressful situations. Pretty powerful right?

Easing depression

It is often said that your 2000 year-old brain is designed to help you be on a constant lookout for signs of danger so you can react immediately, if needed, to any threats coming your way ( if a lion is running towards you, you immediately run in the opposite direction !!!) However, although today’s lifestyle is very different, we still have a pre-wired brain that is inclined to focus more on negatives rather than positives. People suffering from depression also tend to focus more on the negatives.

Positive affirmations can lead to ‘cognitive restructuring’ of the brain, so that your perception of yourself and the world around you becomes much more positive and optimistic. I have to say that this is completely true for me and my experience of using daily affirmations.

Improves your overall well-being

So by helping to reduce your stress, reduce your anxiety, your regular affirmation practice can continue to help your overall well-being. It can positively impact your sleep habits, your eating habits, your levels of motivation to exercise, and generally encourage you to do things that are going to better care for yourself on a higher level.

When you see yourself in this light as someone who is capable, someone who is able to achieve the success that you desire, as someone who has enhanced value and is beloved, then you’re really going to treat yourself with much more respect and elevate your overall well-being.

Seven Types of Goals In Life

Sometimes the exercise of choosing which types of goals to set can be a bit mechanical and not aligned with who you are and what you’re about. Isn’t it better to have goals that are in tune with your meaning and essence and more aligned with your overall vision for your life?

Well in this video, you’ll learn the different types of goals in life that you could bring into your life. Let’s look at the categories of goals in life list according to your meaning and your relationships and your motivation. Let’s dive straight in.

I was inspired by a great article by a financial expert and blogger Anthony O’Neal. I loved his approach and how he shared it, and so I was inspired to share my takeaways and highlights with you.

What I like about this approach, before you even get to the seven categories, is that you start with an overall vision for yourself and your life, as the journey to fulfilling your purpose as a divine being, a child of God. Having a desire to be the person that God created you to be, for me, is a great position to take as your foundation, before you even start to choose and set the goals in your life.

So when you’ve got your vision in place, everything else flows from that.

You start off with your vision for who you want to be. Link this with your purpose as a divine being in the world. The person who you think God wants you to be. Having that vision for yourself. What sort of person do you want to be. That is your starting point for your goals. Because everything then flows from that amazing vision of you.

Spiritual Goals

So he starts with Spiritual Goals. This resonates with me as the most important for me. Everything I do revolves around how I can develop relationship with God and being that best version of myself. So if your spiritual goal is to go deeper into your identity as a spiritual person, then an example of a goal may be how you carve out that time for yourself everyday for prayer and meditation, or reading the bible, or prayerful writing. Strengthening your connection to your Source. Have a think about what this might be for you.

Financial

Financial goals – really important as it is part of you being a responsible person and living your life fully, which choice and without burden. It could be about getting to grips with your debts and getting a plan in place. Maybe you don’t have any debts anymore and its about saving for a special event, your next lovely holiday or building up your investments.

Career

Career goals – if you’re an employed person you may be working towards a promotion, or making yourself more valuable, or trying a secondment to feed your need to try something different. Or maybe its about creating something for yourself like a business or a side hustle or a creative outlet for yourself. What could this mean for you? Remember, all the while you are relating this back to your overall vision for yourself.

Educational

Educational goals – becoming a life-long learner. Learning doesn’t stop when you leave school, college or uni. Brendon Burchard coaches on creating your own personal curriculum, what skillsets do you need to get to that next stepping stone or achievement for you? It could be about feeding your creativity with a new language or learning how to express yourself in a certain way. What could this be for you?

Fitness

Fitness goals – if you are physically able to exercise, what are you able to do that will energise you, help you to keep your heart healthy, and keep your systems, your joints and muscles in good working order. It doesn’t have to be about going to the gym. It could be about getting better organised about your fitness, like when you do it, as opposed to what you do. I learned to link my daily pilates rebounding machine exercises to a different existing part of my day that is non-negotiable and already a habit. That way, when I do the thing that’s already ingrained within me, I remember to add on my 10 minutes of rebounding.

Family

Family goals -where does family fit in to your life? Perhaps you’d like to have more family time but there always seems to be other stuff getting in the way? It may help to create a goal around this so that it becomes a priority. Keeping up to date with adult siblings with a weekly phone call, or a monthly catch up? Scheduling some activities together, or planning when you’re taking those journeys to visit family who live far away? What might this mean for you?

Social

Social goals – this one is quite interesting. It is not necessarily about ‘doing’ more or going out more. Think about those relationships in your life that nourish you. That serve you in your life. Are they priorities for you? Could you do with reducing the impact of those relationships that do not enrich your life or bring you value or enjoyment in any way whatsoever? Could you learn to say ‘no’ a bit more to bring balance into your overly busy life? What could this mean for you?

3 Ways To Pay Off Your Debt

Are you in debt? Maybe you’re finally in the headspace to start putting a plan together to get rid of your debt once and for all? Perhaps taking the next step is a bit unclear?

In this video, you’ll learn about Dave Ramsey’s first 3 ways to pay off your debts, as he sets out in his Baby Steps and Debt Snowball Method. When you are looking to tackle your debt and looking for ways to pay off debts, sometimes you get overwhelmed and may not know exactly where to start.

Sometimes the most empowering thing you can do is to find a good place to start. I hope this video will help you start identifying the ways to pay off your debts. Let’s dive straight in.

Zero Based Budget

It’s interesting just how many of us have a very vague and general version of a budget, that ultimately doesn’t help or serve you with your money and spending habits.

Having the right budget is crucial. Here I talk about the ‘income minus expenses equals zero’ budget.

Emergency Fund of £1000

I find it interesting how this step is taken before you even start to look at making payments on debts. It’s great because having this pot of emergency money will stop you from reaching for the dreaded credit card for those unexpected emergency type expenses that arise. By the way, emergency fund isn’t code for ‘wow I can buy that handbag I’ve had my eye on!’

List your debts and tackle the smallest one first

This is interesting as I hear a lot of commentators encouraging making a start on the debt with the highest interest rate first. I talk about Dave Ramsey’s legendary debt snowball method.

3 Mindset Tips On How To Manage Pain (Hidden Disabilities)

In this video, you’ll learn about 3 mindset tips (also practical tips) to help you, when you are experiencing serious or chronic pain, perhaps as part of your hidden disability. Millions of people just like me, all around the world, have a hidden disability where one of the symptoms involves experiencing varying levels of pain and so finding ways to manage pain, or tips on how to manage pain, are so important for your lived experience and journey of life.

So let’s dive straight in. I explain a bit about how my hidden disability manifests itself in my body and in my everyday to give you some context.

First up – Lose the Warrior !

A lot of people have this attitude towards pain, where you’re in fighter mode, like you have declared a war on your pain. And your language changes and your mindset reflects this too. I used to feel that way as I thought it was the only way to get through my agony. However, I have since found that this consumes so much of my energy and actually can work against me and become counter productive.

So I moved from that to trying to view the pain episode and embracing it as a part of my journey and relationship with pain. This involved having a real acceptance, in the moment, in that moment of pain, almost like a letting go. Almost like I’m distancing myself a little bit. I know some people are programmed to fight against the word ‘acceptance’ or ‘surrender’, but I have found that there is a real strength in that.

Next – Focus on getting over the bridge!

Focussing on moving to the next point. Maybe if pain is a regular part of your life as part of your HD, you will know that there are times when the pain is SO severe. And rather than focusing on the slightly longer term things (like will I have to take time off work? will I need to go into hospital? what will I do with all the food I just bought in the fridge?),

just focus on the next moment thing (okay I’ve just taken some strong pain relief which should kick in in about 20 mins, let me focus on my deep breathing and try to calm down for the next 10 mins and reassess). And ONLY focussing on that. Condensing your focus within the pain just on the next moment. Getting over to that next point, over the bridge.

Lastly – Single person Ninja Strategies! Time to get smart!

Maybe you’re like me and millions globally who live alone. If you have a HD and have a long-term relationship with pain and have to manage your pain, then you do need some ninja strategies, to make this whole process as simplified and empowering as possible for you. What do I mean by that? Well we’ll need a bit of planning, a bit of preparation.

Knowing at what point is the final point where I absolutely will need to get help, call an ambulance etc. Also, being quite organised in what you’re going to need and when. So where is your key room at home, where you know that if you’re going into a painful episode, that is your go-to place, because that is where you have all your stuff within easy reach.

Where you’ve got extra blankets, access to your water bottle, your tv remote for those comedies to help you get through your painful episode, where your phone is fully charged, easy access to the toilet an/or kitchen for when your pain hits a plateau and you can finally stand upright and hobble about – whatever you need!

Also planning your hospital bag ready to go, should the worst happen and your home pain management can’t cut it in this instance because the pain has spiked and suddenly it has become an emergency.

It really is about a marathon, rather than a sprint! So the thing is to help yourself get through this time, as tomorrow is another day with more life to enjoy.

Your Life Now Does Not Limit Your Future Self

So you wake up one morning, and you look at your life, and you feel weary …..and you sigh and think, ‘the vision I have for myself and my life feels like its so far away from where I’m at right now……am I just kidding myself..?”. Does this sound familiar?

Well my friend you’re really not alone in thinking this way, from time to time. This video is for you!

The trick is to recognise when you have these feelings and thoughts, and catch them before they do any lasting damage, and then change how you feel. But how?

I am a huge fan of the author and success coach Brendon Burchard. He teaches and empowers you in a way that truly resonates with me, and he brings such value to the world. If you’ve never heard of him, please please Google him and learn more. Well, one of his teachings inspired this video, so let’s dive in.

Let’s talk about how we can get so caught up in the stuff of life, often its the stuff that is your ‘busy work’ not your ‘passion work’ as Brendon describes, and this can weigh heavily on us. You know how disheartening it can be when you feel like there is no time to do what you really want to do….. and how can you move forward in the direction of your dreams?

What about when people like your family and friends take a view of what you say you’re going to do and say ‘you can never do that’, or worse, give you that annoying smirk smile that says ‘yeah right!’ and it just gets under your skin, particularly on those days when you’re not feeling as mentally strong as you usually do. People say things that are, in my words, a lot of nonsense, and it is stuff that is usually based on their own fears and certainly not something you should factor into your decision-making.

What about, “You’re stupid for thinking that that would ever happen!”. Yep, that’s another one we love to hate. In the video I talk about how to take care not to share your innermost goals and dreams with just anyone. Something I have learnt first-hand over the years!

In the video I also talk about the importance of continuously believing in yourself, pushing past the struggle to feed your belief in yourself and I share an example of how I have done this in the past. And 1 more super important ninja step which you need to take!
